Annie Potts teases her return as Janine Melnitz in Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters sequel. Potts appeared in Ivan Reitman’s two Ghostbusters movies in the ’80s as Melnitz; the secretary for the Ghostbusters and the love interest of Egon Spengler and Louis Tully.
The original Ghostbusters movies are beloved by fans and starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. Fans have been waiting a long time to see a true Ghostbusters 3, but the series was rebooted in 2016 with an all female cast instead. Most of the Ghostbusters cast returned for Paul Feig’s movie, but only in cameo roles as different characters. Reitman’s film is set in the original Ghostbusters universe and Sigourney Weaver previously revealed that Murray, Aykroyd, and herself were returning for the new film. Now, it looks like the Ghostbusters will have their secretary back once again.
Word of Potts’ return to the Ghostbusters universe was first reported by Arrow in the Head. Details about her role in the film are extremely thin and the actresses hasn’t officially been signed onto the project, but Potts commented, “I have heard some things. If it’s true, what I’ve heard — yeah, I think it’s gonna happen. I think I will”.
While Reitman’s Ghostbusters sequel seems to be a reunion of sorts for the the original cast members, Ghostbusters 3 will also see some fresh faces. So far, Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) has been cast, along with the younger actors McKenna Grace (Captain Marvel) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things). As of right now, Ernie Hudson still hasn’t been confirmed for the film and neither has Rick Moranis, the latter of which remained out of the spotlight since his wife died in 1991. That being said, Hudson did reveal that he had spoken to both Reitmans about the new Ghostbusters.
With the new Ghostbusters supposedly being a love letter to the original, it only seems right that this many of the cast members are returning. Potts’s character wasn’t as important as the four main Ghostbusters, but was still unforgettable and was much more developed in Ghostbusters II. If her character were to return, it would also give Moranis a reason to join the project since the two became a couple in the first sequel. Fans will have to wait until next year to catch Potts’ Ghostbusters return, but her voice will be heard in cinemas all around the world this weekend when Bo Peep returns in Toy Story 4.
