Iron Man 2 features Tony Stark referencing project G.O.L.I.A.T.H. - something that will be fully explained in Ant-Man & the Wasp. As per the upcoming sequel’s latest trailer, project G.O.L.I.A.T.H. was worked on by Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Bill Foster (Laurence Fishburne), who examined how the Pym Particles can be used to expand someone’s mass. Foster even giddily told Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) that he was able to grow to a maximum height of 21 feet, while his contemporary proudly shared that he grew to 65 feet.
It’s no secret that Iron Man 2 was one of the more divisive film entries in the MCU. But besides the messy plot and forgettable villain, the film had its memorable moments - including Tony’s cool suiting-up scene in Monaco, as well as Howard’s surprisingly emotional videotape addressed to his son. But more than those, finding these Easter eggs years after its release illustrates how creative Kevin Feige and his team at Marvel Studios were in planting plot seeds in early films with the intention of fully exploring them down the road.
Reddit user waddafaque posted a clip featuring Tony referencing the G.O.L.I.A.T.H. project in Iron Man 2. While looking for any possible solution for his arc reactor dilemma, he casually asked J.A.R.V.I.S. to “tap the Oracle grid. I need some things out of storage. Give me everything from Projects P.E.G.A.S.U.S., E.X.O.D.U.S. and G.O.L.I.A.T.H.” P.E.G.A.S.U.S. has already been explored in 2012’s The Avengers as S.H.I.E.L.D. examined the Tesseract. Now that two of the three programs have come to light, it’s interesting what E.X.O.D.U.S. would be about (maybe it has something to do with Captain Marvel).
While it may have taken quite a while to introduce the idea of Pym Particles to the MCU (director Edgar Wright was working on the film as early as 2006, only to exit the project in 2014 and be replaced by Peyton Reed), the concept is expected to be pivotal in the franchise moving forward. The first Ant-Man film in 2015 barely explored the tech other than its ability to shrink anything. But with the debut of the Scott’s Giant-Man in Captain America: Civil War and the upcoming introduction of the character’s original iteration in Ant-Man & the Wasp, it’s safe to say that it’ll be a staple concept in the film series.
On the surface, it may look like not much is going on with Ant-Man & the Wasp, especially in comparison to Infinity War, but fans shouldn’t sleep on the sequel. It can divulge additional clues on how Avengers 4 will possibly go down given that it’s supposedly the most connected to Avengers 3. The exploration of the Quantum Realm could even be a factor in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ quest to ultimately defeat Thanos. Set photos from next year’s Marvel ensemble flick revealed that Scott will be part of a mysterious mission alongside MCU’s cornerstone heroes such as Tony Stark, Captain America, and the Hulk, teasing his importance in the Phase 3 capper.
